Complaints against the top 10 most complained about general insurance products rose by 8% between July and September, Financial Ombudsman Service figures reveal

Car and motorcycle insurance is still the most complained about general insurance product, excluding payment protection insurance (PPI), according to figures released today by the Financial Ombudsman Service (FOS).

The FOS received 1,958 complaints about car and motor insurance between July and September 2014, an increase of 5% on the same period in 2013.

The top 10 most complained about products (excluding PPI), see below, had 5,733 complaints about then referred to the FOS over the three months, compared with 5,308 for the same period in 2013 – an 8% increase.

Card protection insurance saw the biggest rise in complaints handled by the FOS, climbing by 50% to 446. Private medical and dental insurance experienced the biggest decrease, with complaints falling by a fifth compared with the same period last year.

Meanwhile, PPI complaints have continued to wane, with the FOS receiving 57,094 complaints between July and September, down more than 50% from the 115,247 received a year ago.
