The theme of this year's European Week for Safety and Health is "Workplace safety is no accident".

According to Newport-based insurance brokers John Henshall, work activities kill 400 people each year and more than a million people are injured each year. These accidents result in an £18bn loss to the British economy.

The week is to be held from October 15 to 19, 2001, and businesses across Europe are being asked to focus their attention on reducing the number of workplace accidents.

Meanwhile, the Family Firm Institute is to hold its Annual World Conference in the UK for the first time.

According to the institute, the conference is the leading business forum for the family business field and is being held in the UK in recognition of the growing family business sector in Europe.

The conference will run from October 10 to 12, 2001 at the Hilton London Metropole.
