Young women drivers could be priced out of the motor insurance market if a draft EU Directive on gender discrimination becomes law, according to the Comite Europeen des Assurances (CEA).
The group has spoken out against the EU initiative that would outlaw the use of gender as an insurance ratings determiner.
The organisation claims the issue is not one of discrimination but of producing fair, objective assessment of risk.
The CEA says that by excluding gender from ratings engines women drivers would face higher premiums despite being better drivers.
A statement by the organisation says: "Gender is one of the key risks when assessing premiums for motor insurance.
"The ability to price according to risk provides an important signal to drivers about the importance of road safety and safe driving."
