American insurer Chubb cannot guarantee safe flights but it has launched the first UK air rage cover policy.

According to a report into air rage commissioned by Chubb, the soaring number of air rage incidents since the mid-1990s was a threat to the "implicit contract of civilised behaviour" between air travellers.

Ultimately, the report said, air rage could raise doubts about the future of air travel.

It said passengers caught up in air rage incidents were likely to suffer post-traumatic stress reactions.

The insurer will reimburse people who have to pay out for medical or psychiatric services as a result of air rage, and compensate those who have to take time off work. Chubb is adding the cover to its Masterpiece policy.
