Travel insurers are expecting a higher number of claims following the cancellation of flights due to the bad weather conditions.

At Heathrow Airport, 150 flights were shelved by 5.30pm yesterday. Airport managers had cleared the runways of ice but neglected to grit embarkation stands which delayed take-off.

Hundreds of passengers woke at Luton airport after being forced to spend the night there. While flights from Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen to Heathrow, Gatwick, Birmingham, Manchester and Southampton were all cancelled. At Gatwick and Stansted, a total of 18 flights were cancelled due to the poor weather conditions.

More than 1,100 people were stranded at Bournemouth Airport as 12 aircrafts from Stansted, Gatwick, Luton and Heathrow were diverted, the Daily Mail said today.
