I agree completely with Tom Jones that we all want safer workplaces (Comment, 24 May).

The insurance industry has a long and proud history of driving safety in many areas, including at work.

But it is a cheap jibe for Tom to assert that under the recently published Ministry of Justice proposals on personal injury compensation reform, “employers and insurers will be able to balance what it will cost to maim a worker against the profits they make”.

For a start, insurance cannot cover the fines which are levied on companies which break the law. But more importantly I know of no ABI member which would countenance advising such a cynical trade-off. .

The 2025 Insurance Times Awards took place on the evening of Wednesday 3rd December in the iconic Great Room of London’s Grosvenor House.
