The Road Safety Bill could have serious implications for car insurance premiums, it has been warned.
Under the Bill, the government proposed that motorists found using their mobile phones while driving would automatically incur a £60 fine and three points on their driving license.
According to car insurance search service Confused.com, penalties will have a significant impact on the cost of car insurance premiums.
The three points for a mobile phone offence would have the same effect on premiums as a speeding conviction, it said.
Insurers could add up to 15%-20% on premiums for one conviction, 30% for two convictions, and up to 80% for three convictions, it claimed.
