Search firm aims to soften blow of anti-competition probe

Google has offered a series of concessions to European Union regulators amid the probe into whether the online search firm has been abusing its dominant position.

News reports suggest that Google, which launched insurance price comparison service Google Compare last September, has offered to label search results that feature Google’s own products and services.

The EU launched a probe into Google in November 2010 over concerns of ‘search bias’.

Regulators are worried that the company could use its dominant position in search provision to promote its own offerings, such as price comparison, in its search results, giving it an unfair competitive advantage over rival products and services.

Google Compare is built on technology from price comparison firm BeatThatQuote, which Google bought in March 2011.
