History: Swinton was founded in Manchester in 1957 by Ken Scowcroft, specialising in car insurance. It expanded throughout the 1960s and 1970s through both owned and franchised branches.

Royal & SunAlliance took a holding in 1988 which it increased to 100% in 1993. The 1990s were a period of retrenchment and the company withdrew from franchising.

In May 2001, Royal & SunAlliance sold Swinton to MMA insurance. Swinton has resumed growth both organically and through acquisitions. It has made 60 acquisitions in the last two years, the largest being Colonnade in May 2002.

Swinton is an independent intermediary for general insurance business and deals with a large number of insurers and syndicates for motor, household and commercial insurance as well as other personal lines. Swinton manages over 1.1 million policies. Swinton took over Colonnade in 2002 (see page 39).
