History: Marsh employs more than 35,000 professionally qualified consultants and support staff in over 100 countries.

It is a major subsidiary of Marsh & McLennan Companies (MMC), a global professional services firm based in New York which has annual revenues exceeding $10bn (£7.2bn). This enables Marsh's clients to have access to the capabilities of Mercer Consulting Group, a major global provider of consulting services, and Putnam Investments, one of the largest investment management companies in the US. Other operations include Guy Carpenter, which provides reinsurance broking services.

Today, Marsh has some 6,500 staff at more than 30 office locations in the UK.

Biographies
Michael Hammond: Hammond has 20 years' experience in insurance and reinsurance broking and risk management consulting for global corporations. Following the acquisition of Sedgwick by J&H Marsh and McLennan, he was appointed managing director of the Global Risk Finance Group for the UK and Europe. In January 2000, he became executive director for all client management and risk consulting operations in the UK.

Between 1992 and 1997, he was based in the US, where he held a number of senior management positions, including managing director for Sedgwick Global's operations in North America. He also had day-to-day responsibility for the insurance broking and risk management activities in the New York metropolitan region between 1995 and 1997.

Stephen Matanle: Matanle has over 20 years' experience in property insurance and specialises in risk management accounts. He first joined Bowring in 1974, working in the property claims department.

A year later he moved to property placement. In 1982, he was made a director of CT Bowring & Co (Insurance) and a year later, in 1983, he assumed the title of executive director of the property department and was responsible for 80 people.

He was appointed a managing director of Marsh & McLennan, incorporated in March 1988. He briefly left in July 1988 to join Gallagher Plumer North America as chairman and managing director. He subsequently rejoined Bowring North America in June 1989 as deputy chief executive and, in January 1992, he assumed the role of chief executive of Bowring Worldwide Insurance Brokers. As from January 1995, he has undertaken the role of chairman and chief executive of Marsh & McLennan Global Broking, now renamed Marsh Global Broking. In September 2000, he was made head of placement for Marsh Europe and appointed to the Marsh Europe Board. In March 2001, he was appointed chief executive, Marsh Speciality Operations and elected a member of the executive committee.

Mike Cooper-Mitchell: He joined Sedgwick Collins in 1965. After specialising in property and liability insurance, including broking at Lloyd's, he was appointed account executive developing and servicing industrial and commercial clients.

He became a director of Sedgwick Forbes, London, in 1979 and a director of Sedgwick UK in 1985. In October 1986, he moved to Manchester as managing director, northern region. He returned to London in 1990, responsible for the UK branch network, and was then appointed chairman of Sedgwick UK and a director of Sedgwick Europe in 1993.

In 1997, he was appointed deputy chairman responsible for international operations in Europe, Latin America, Africa, India and the Middle East.

Following the merger of Sedgwick and Marsh & McLennan in December 1998, he joined the board of Marsh Europe as executive vice president of Marsh.
