NU customer services director Simon Machell said: "November 5 is pennies from heaven for burglars. People don't tend to think about security while they are out enjoying themselves ."
Meanwhile insurance premiums for bonfire night parties are forcing many events to be cancelled. Typical premiums for local authority events have rocketed to around £500.
