Abbey National has unveiled its buildings and contents insurance "quote and buy" service on the internet, using a panel of insurers including AXA, Equity Red Star, Folgate, Fortis, Groupama Link and MMA.

The move is part of Abbey National's drive to increase its general insurance revenue by 40% over the next three years.

The site features a price guide service that provides an approximate price based on a small set of key questions or a full quotation.

It also allows customers to identify how much insurance they need and tailors it to cover their individual circumstances.

An Abbey National spokesman said: "Our choice of insurance partners reflects Abbey National's strategy of focusing on providing our customers with good-value insurance cover, suited to their specific needs."

In the first half of next year, Abbey National plans to offer motor insurance online and through telesales.

Abbey National's online system will be supported by the Consumer Direct IT management system, jointly developed by Capita Insurance Services and Cap Gemini Ernst & Young.
