The government needs to do more to minimise the impact of increasing flood risks over the next 50 years, law firm Charles Russell and the ABI have warned.

The ABI's policy adviser on natural perils Sebastian Catovsky said successive governments should make a commitment to sustained expenditure and floodplain planning guidance

Speaking yesterday at Charles Russell's seminar on flood plain development and insurance, he said: "Flood risk will increase in the future.

"There must be continued commitment both to sustained spending on river and coastal defences, and dramatic improvements to tackle sewer and urban flash-flooding."
