A newspaper has named the former Norwich Union claims handler at the centre of a £1.5m fraud scandal.

The Eastern Daily Press said the woman, Carol Birrell, is one of 30 people named in a writ lodged at the High Court by the insurer, accusing her of raising fraudulent cheques.

The alleged fraud is believed to have been committed in a Norwich Union office in Southend involving the processing of fraudulent claims.

A Norwich Union spokesman told Insurance Times that it is too early to comment on the case.
