Hiscox Insurance Company Ltd had its financial strength rating of A- (excellent) confirmed by rating agency AM Best.
The rating outlook was said to be stable.

AM Best said Hiscox had "excellent capitalisation and prospective financial performance, excellent business profile with leadership in certain specialist lines and [an] experienced management team."

These positives were offset by a disappointing investment return and high expense ratio.

Hiscox's rating depended on it being able to draw on capital from its parent, Hiscox plc which gave a £20m cash injection in December.

AM Best forecast pre-tax operating profits to improve from the £2.8m figure achieved in 2001.

The company would also keep to a combined ratio of less than 100%.
