Retailers are being asked to focus on a new anti-fraud initiative aiming to reduce the UK's highest ever card fraud losses, which cost nearly £430m in the last 12 months.
'Don't Stand 4 Fraud' - a co-ordinated fraud-fighting campaign by the UK banking industry, retailers, police and Crimestoppers - is being launched to coincide with the Christmas period.
Mark Bowerman of APACS said, "Highly organised criminals are responsible for the massive rises in card fraud over the past few years.
"These criminals will probably increase their fraudulent efforts over the next year before the introduction of the chip and PIN system, but just by following a simple
routine every time they handle a transaction shop staff can stop criminals operating in their shops."
