Parents should check their home insurance policies to see if children going to university are covered under their current policies, says Charcol Insurance Brokers managing director Nigel Asplin.
Parents may assume that the policy automatically provides cover, but it may not, says Asplin. The approach adopted by insurers and the scope of cover can vary considerably.
Parents should check standard exclusions, limits on sums insured and conditions of cover.
Insurers would also expect to be informed of this change of circumstance in advance, he continues.
