The Association of Personal Injury Lawyers (Apil) has voiced disappointment at the Court of Appeal ruling on pleural plaques.

Apil said in a statement: "We are bitterly disappointed that the Court of Appeal considers pleural plaques to be trivial, when in actual fact it can blight people's lives for decades.

"Once the lungs have been scarred through asbestos exposure, victims are playing a waiting game which amounts to nothing less than mental torture. While costs are obviously important, justice and fairness for those harmed by another's negligence should be paramount.

"We can only hope that this judgment will be overturned in the event of an appeal."
