Asda has launched a health cash plan pilot in 40 if its UK stores, which it said would offer customers a 50% reduction on everyday medical bills.

Research conducted by the supermarket revealed that nearly a third of UK adults have not visited the dentist for a check-up within the last year, while one in six adults have not visited the opticians within the last year.

The Asda Health Cash Plan is available in three levels of cover, with premiums starting from £1.33 per week.

“Asda is the first supermarket financial services provider to design a straightforward product to help customers bring down the rising costs of everyday medical bills, for their dentist, optician, chiropractor or chiropodist,” said Asda financial services director David Rutley.

“Since launching our financial services business a year ago, sales both online and through our call centres, have far exceeded targets. Our conversion rates have been particularly strong, reflecting our value-for-money proposition. Our call centre operation has grown six fold in as many months.

“The formula is working well, we have now launched eight products and there are plans for more in the future.
