New research has revealed that the contents of a typical family home is worth more than the price of an average property in 1986.

Financial services group More Th>n found that the average contents of a house are currently valued at £42,000 while the average cost of a property in 1986 was £40,126, said a report.

"While you'd expect contents valuations to have changed since the 1970s, the increases we've seen in the past few years have been amazing," said Steve Knight, head of home insurance for More Th>n.

"The figures really show how the consumer boom entered our living rooms, kitchens and bathrooms - and even the garden shed, which often has contents worth thousands," concluded the report.

The 2025 Insurance Times Awards took place on the evening of Wednesday 3rd December in the iconic Great Room of London’s Grosvenor House.

Hosted by comedian and actor Tom Allen, 34 Gold, 23 Silver and 22 Bronze awards were handed out across an amazing 34 categories recognising brilliance and innovation right across the breadth of UK general insurance.
