Aviva has confirmed the acquisition of US life insurer AmerUS Group for £1.6bn in cash.
Aviva said this will be financed by a combination of a £900m equity placing, internal resources and external debt.
The company said the acquisition will transform its US business, "establishing a leading position in a high-growth segment of the world's largest savings market".
The group also gave a trading update saying it had achieved a strong performance in the first half of the year.
