Aviva has confirmed it is in discussions to acquire US life assurer, AmerUs Group.

The company said in a stock exchange announcement that a transaction, if agreed, is expected to be funded from a combination of its internal resources, external debt and a market placing of its shares.

It said the discussions are consistent with its strategy of pursuing value creating acquisition opportunities in key growth segments of the major global long term savings markets.

Aviva had contact with AmerUs at the start of the year, after its £17bn takeover approach to rival Prudential was rejected in March.
