AXA chairman Henri de Castries has revealed that the French insurer is considering acquisitions in the US and Europe.

The announcement followed AXA's results statement yesterday, which showed an 82% rise in its group net profit to 949m euros (£646.5m).

De Castries said: "There are a certain number of markets in which we would like to reinforce our presence and where acquisitions could make sense.

"Among those markets are clearly the US and certain European countries. But we will remain opportunistic.

"The current crisis will generate opportunities in the future. The improvement in our operating performances strengthens our capacity to seize them as they arise."
