Carl Whiteley (pictured), founder of independent financial adviser and insurance broker Belmont Regency, died on Wednesday when his aircraft crashed into the English Channel.

His wife, Kathryn Whiteley, who was on board the plane with him, also died in the accident.

The Derbyshire-based businessman was piloting his Cessna Crusader aircraft on a flight home from northern France to Jersey in thick fog when the accident took place.

In a statement issued by Belmont Regency on 5 September, managing director Brett Hannon said: “Carl jointly founded the company in 1982 with me, and apart from being business partners for over 31 years, Carl was a close friend who will be greatly missed.

“The fondest memories will remain with me and our staff of our dear departed colleague.”
