Berkshire Hathaway has estimated that its insurance and reinsurance operations will take between 3% and 5% of the total insurance industry losses from Hurricane Katrina, currently estimated by catastrophe modellers to reach $60bn.
If that proves to be the case, Berkshire Hathaway's losses could reach $3bn.
