The insurance industry should embrace medical research to understand risk, warned Lord Robert Winston.
Speaking at the Biba conference, Lord Winston encouraged brokers to understand the purpose of research to prevent an increase in critical illness.
He said: "Medical research could save lives but ethics and gut reactions prevent progress."
The scientist and TV presenter known for his progressive and controversial views on IVF and reproductive genes also said insurers should ensure pending FSA regulation does not over regulate the industry to inhibit progress.
"Regulation of medical research looks at the wrong issues is arrogant, remote and statistics can be unreliable. It inhibits research and government bodies are no better."
