Brit Insurance has said its underwriting activities "are configured to withstand" events such as the terrorist attacks in New York and Washington on Tuesday, September 11, 2001. But it added that insurance premiums would inevitably rise.

The firm said its early estimates indicate that its main exposure to Tuesday's events will come from its catastrophe reinsurance underwriting, with losses falling within planned for scenarios such as a major US earthquake.

"Brit's operations are not directly involved in the building insurance of the twin towers at the World Trade Centre. Its exposure to the two airlines concerned and any relevant war risk exposure is minimal," it said.
