The Chancellor yesterday promised to cut one million inspections on businesses a year by adopting the recommendations of the Hampton Report in full. The report, led by Sainsbury's chairman Philip Hampton, prescribes cutting the number of business inspection agencies from 35 to nine. This will reduce the situation where businesses fill in effectively the same form multiple times, according to Hampton. The report also recommends making inspections more risk-based, scrutinising and punishing where necessary, but making life easier for companies with good records. The moves have been embraced by the ABI, the CBI and the Forum of Private Business (FPB).
