Businesses should receive at least three weeks' notice before their employers' liability premiums are increased, Biba has warned.

Biba has called for the measure as part of a package of new standards being put forward for the industry.

The call comes amid accusations by business leaders that insurers are giving short notice for renewals so customers have few alternatives. Biba claims premiums have increased by between 50% and 200% last year.

Biba chief executive Mike Williams said: "We've been talking for several months about a set of voluntary standards and one of them is to let policyholders know in reasonable time before their cover expires.

"There have been occasions of brinkmanship when insurers have held on till the last minute, but they've been very few and far between. Insurers don't want the reputational risk."
