The CBI has today praised the government's attempt to stabilise the underlying increases in business insurance costs.

Responding to today's DWP announcement on employers' liability insurance, the employers' organisation said it particularly welcomed the fresh drive to speed up the rehabilitation of employees.

CBI deputy director-general John Cridland said: "The government is right to tackle insurance cost volatility by rethinking rehabilitation. Swift recoveries are good for both employer and employee, but many questions remain unanswered. Ministers must make clear who will fund improvements to the rehabilitation framework and how these changes will relate to smaller firms that face greater difficulties getting staff back to work."

But Cridland said that more work was needed to further stabilise premiums and tackle the limited availability in sectors such as transport and construction.

"The process for resolving claims remains too expensive and legal and administrative costs must be scaled back."
