One in four insurers may find their car is not insured when they are abroad on holiday this year, according to the AA.

The AA is warning that with over 1 million motorists changing insurers this year, many could be unaware of their rights.

Andrew Briscoe, managing director of AA Insurance Services said: "The bad news is that one in four insurers does not give this cover free, charging a top-up fee - typically about £30 for a fortnight's trip.

"A quarter of all drivers switched their insurer over the last year - the vast majority probably switching on the basis of price alone. They may not realise that the comprehensive cover they had in Europe last year is simply not provided by their new policy.

"Motorists are too easily lured into the trap of focusing just on the price of their insurance. Unfortunately they find out the hard way when it comes to the crunch that not all policies are the same."
