Independent education consultancy Atend has warned local education authorities (LEA) and schools that not all supply teacher policies offer the same extent of cover - and many have let their clients down in the past.
Atend spokesman Ian Rayland said: "Previously policies that gave the impression of being reliable let schools down because of broker or insurer failure. Yet some of the failings could have been predicted if the LEA or school had hte benefit of a detailed understanding of their insurance policy.
"Schools and LEAs need to be aware that not all insurance providers have adequate backing from a reputable broker to pay out claims, and that the cheapest may definitely not be the best."
Atend has been formed in order to give LEAs and schools impartial advice to help them choose the right insurance cover.
