Flood management schemes could become seriously limited by legislation concerning the EC water framework directive, the CII claimed.
According to the CII's information services online factfile legislation would prevent sustainable solutions to flood hazards from being considered.
Factfile author David Crichton said insurers should take a holistic approach to flood prevention. He also said it should look to competent drainage systems to tackle the problem.
He said a survey showed insurers were unaware of the sustainable drainage systems (SUDS) scheme. The approach to drainage issues is routine in new housing development, and should be employed by insurers, he said.
