Axa has clarified the exclusion of groundwater flooding in renewals of its Release Residential policies, to avoid misunderstandings with policyholders.

Personal lines underwriting head Kevin Sinclair said flooding caused by rising groundwater levels had never been covered under the policy, but had not been stated previously.

“We're making sure we're 100% clear for the general public on what the position is.”

Sinclair said Axa had not notified brokers of the change because, as insurance professionals, brokers would have already advised their clients that groundwater flooding was not covered.
