The Co-operative Insurance Society (CIS) is tackling `bumper dumpers' and the damaging cost to the environment and insurers of replacing 200,000 plastic bumpers every year.
CIS believes the practice of replacing rather than repairing bumpers is placing an unnecessary burden on customers and the planet.
It estimates the discarded parts occupy space equivalent of five football pitches one metre deep every year, while adding £400m to insurance claims.
But by offering mechanics half the replacement price of a new bumper, to repair the old, the insurer hopes to cut costs for the customer and do its bit for the environment.
