Motorists may switch to two-wheel transport once the £5 congestion fee is introduced in London, according to motorcycle insurance specialist Bennetts.

The company claims it is bracing itself for a dramatic increase in bike insurance policies when the fee is finally enforced from 17 February, 2003.

Bennetts said it could cost a commuter driving a car into the centre of London over £1,250 a year.

The company has also published a new guide, called Think Ahead, for inexperienced motorcyclists offering advice on road safety.
