Global software attacks more than doubled in 2001 compared to the previous year, according to a new report.

Deliberate damage to company computer systems rose by 124% from 1,090 to 2,437 in 2001, according to Mi2g Intelligence Unit.

Mi2g said new software vulnerabilities are being exploited by virus writers, disgruntled employees and "hacktivists".

Technology analysts are predicting that sales of technology insurance products will rise significantly as firms become more aware of the risk of cyber crime.
