Essex Police have launched a database to help clamp down on lorry load thefts.

The National Lorry Load Theft database, sponsored by RSA, is a point of reference to police all over the UK and parts of mainland Europe.

The database provides the police with the only nationwide point of contact for tracing stolen lorry loads.

"The new database is being jointly funded by the police and private industry," said PC Iain McKinnon, the scheme's co-ordinator.

"We hope it will allow professionals and the public to report suspicious movements through a secure web site."
