CBI director general Digby Jones said rising insurance costs had negative implications for UK businesses.

Jones told business leaders in Birmingham: “Rising insurance costs, particularly those relating to employers' liability, are without doubt having a negative impact on the competitiveness of UK businesses, especially smaller companies or those in high risk industries.”

He said co-operation between the industry and the government was the key to unlocking the difficulties facing smaller companies.

“It is vital that the insurance industry and the government work together on these issues, if cover is to stay within the reach of many firms.”

The presentation was given at a seminar organised by Marsh.
