Cunningham Lindsey has identified digital risk as one of the "major perils" facing insurers.
Commercial projects director John O'Neill said many insurers were "ignorant" of the potential threat posed by digital risks.
"The chances of several systems in a supply chain getting viruses is very high", O'Neill said.
"And the more businesses that go on line, the more insurers' exposure increases."
O'Neill said the growing trend of employees working at home was also increasing the threat of digital risk.
"PCs are playing a more significant role in their home - employees may have their laptops stolen and this gives rise to many data protection issues."
