North Carolina’s barrier island cleared from hurricane threat
Category four hurricane Earl, described by the National Hurricane Centre as “a large and dangerous hurricane” with winds of 135 mph, has caused North Carolina ’s barrier islands to be evacuated, The Tmes reports.
North Carolina’s governor has declared a state of emergency. Warnings and lower-level hurricane watches are in place for most of North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, Connecticut, Rhode Island and part of Massachusetts.
No storm has threatened such a broad swathe of the US shoreline since Hurricane Bob in 1991.
