Plans for EU compensation scheme for collapsed insurers
The European Union’s internal market commissioner Michel Barnier will today put out a white paper on insurance guarantee schemes to protect policyholders in the event of an insurance company failure, the FT reports.
It wants to make compensation schemes - that exist in about a dozen member states but vary widely – to be uniform across the EU.
Views differ about the scale of funds needed and the amount of funding that needs to be placed upfront.
