Ex-Ceiops chief Bernardino confirmed in top Eiopa job

Gabriel Bernardino has been confirmed as the first head of the new pan-European insurance and pensions regulator.

The European Parliament confirmed the appointment of Bernardino, who chaired Eiopa’s predecessor body Ceiops, as chairperson of the European Insurance and Occupational Pensions Authority (EIOPA).

The Portugese regulator’s appointment follows a public hearing on 1 February and he is expected to assume his responsibilities on 1 March, 2011. The post is for a five year term and can be extended once.

Bernardino said: “Independence, objectivity, transparency and accountability will play a key role in making Eiopa a success story. These principles will be applied in our day-to-day operations and in our relations with all stakeholders.”

“I am committed to use the new powers in a proactive way with the ultimate goal to preserve financial stability and better protect EU consumers.”
