Prudential was down 17.5p at 431p, Aviva dropped off 12.5p at 450.5p, Royal & Sun Alliance ended 0.5p lower at 126p and Legal & General fell 3.25p to 93.25p.

An initial attempt to drive stocks higher after Monday's Britannic-inspired decline induced more sellers into the market.
