Car and motorcycle insurance is the most complained about general insurance product, excluding PPI

The Financial Ombudsman Service (FOS) received 62,818 complaints about general insurance products between April and June, 74% of the total complaints it received over that period.

Of these complaints, 56,869 related to payment protection insurance (PPI), down 57% on the 132,152 received during the same period in 2013.

Excluding PPI, the most complained about general insurance product was car and motorcycle insurance, with 1,844 complaints referred to the FOS (see chart, below). This is an increase of 8% compared to the same period in 2013.

The product that saw the biggest increase in complaints was card protection insurance. The FOS received 381 complaints for this type of product, up 54% on the same period last year.

Card protection insurance was also the category of product that had the highest number of complaints upheld, with the ombudsman finding in favour of the consumer on 80% of occasions.

This compares to an average of 55% for all financial products complaints reviewed by the FOS between April and June 2014.
