Bolam, who is also chairman of the GISC's small practitioners group, said he had decided to quit nine months ago.
"I'm 60 and I'd like to make the 800 mile round trip between Edinburgh and London less often than I do now," he said.
Bolam said a number of members of the small practitioners group would make good replacements for him.
