Kent-based GMi Insurance Services has seized on the uncertainty created by the US terrorist attacks to offer specialist kidnap contingency insurance.

Available as a stand-alone policy or as part of a travel insurance portfolio, the cover is aimed at business travellers, but is most likely to be used by high-profile businessmen or celebrities.

GMi said every policy application would be assessed individually, taking into account the profile of the traveller and their destination, but premiums would not be lower than £1,500 plus insurance premium tax (IPT).

The firm would not reveal who the underwriters of the policy were because of security reasons, saying only that the risk was spread between four or five Lloyd's syndicates.
