Green Flag has announced a new safety campaign designed to reduce the number of unnecessary breakdowns and accidents.

The motoring group has revealed plans to publish an online magazine on motor maintenance. The move follows a recent survey that found a third of drivers fail to carry out simple checks.

Green Flag hope the online magazine will encourage drivers to take precautions to reduce breakdowns, which normally increase by 20% between October and February.

Green Flag spokesman Nigel Charlesworth said: "Preparation is the key to trouble-free motoring, but the results of our survey suggest that many drivers aren't checking essentials such as batteries, anti-freeze levels and tyre tread.

"Of course adequate breakdown cover is vital, but the online guide is designed to help drivers to help themselves, as well as raising the awareness of risks."
