Maurice Greenberg transferred over £1bn of shares in AIG to his wife just days before stepping down, it was revealed today.
The transfer of company stock to Mr Greenberg's wife Corinne "represents a gift of 41.399 million shares", according to a document filed with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) by AIG.
AIG's stock closed at $53.20 on last night, valuing the gift at $2.2bn (£1.2bn).
News of the transfer arose during fraud investigations into ex-AIG boss Greenberg led by the SEC and New York attorney general Eliot Spitzer.
