Halifax General Insurance Services has launched new travel insurance policies, within its existing portfolio, aimed at avoiding high and unexpected costs for consumers.

The company, part of the Halifax group, said the new policies limit the excess charge of each incident to £50. It said this differed from other insurers' policies, which charge excess per person or category, resulting in multiple excess charges.

For example, multiple excess charges might be made on family cover when an excess fee is charged for each person, or when they make claims in different categories.

The company added that it was also bringing all underwriting, administration, claims and customer services in-house to improve service levels.

Managing director Howard Posner said: "Customers are looking for products that keep a tight check on costs, and these new policies do just that on both initial policy payments and on excess charges."

The policies offer straightforward, comprehensive cover for travel both in the UK and across the world, with single or multi-trip policies. They also have optional inclusions, such as winter sports or golf cover.
